Why Make a Will?
We recommend that all adults should consult will solicitors when they get married, have children or own property (not necessarily in that order) to set out precisely who is to inherit their possessions after death. Dying without a Will can cause havoc and lead to conflict and anguish to those left behind.
Although the majority of us put off and avoid thinking of such a gloomy subject, it is widely known that a Will is one of the most important documents that you can possess. A Will allows you to decide who is to benefit from your property and possessions. If you do not make a Will the State directs who gets what and how much, and friends, favourite charities and relatives may get nothing.
The Consequences
Many people avoid planning for the inevitable, do not be one of them! Why leave it up to the State to decide when you can! Currently if you are not married to your partner and do not have a Will, your partner may be left with nothing, and this applies even if you have been cohabitating with your partner for many years.
Wills can also be used to express your wishes on other important matters. If you have children under 18, or dependants who may not be able to care for themselves, a Will enables you to name someone of your choice to look after and provide for them should anything happen to you.
Keeping Your Will Up to Date
It is important to keep Wills up to date as a change in your personal circumstances, such as marriage, divorce, civil partnership, or a change in your financial circumstances may affect or revoke a Will.
Our solicitors can advise and help you with all aspects of preparing and drafting a Will to suit you. If you have not yet made a Will, or believe your Will is out of date, please contact us and arrange a meeting.
Michele Thompson is our Wills and Probate solicitor. Michele is able to attend appointments either at our Guildford office or to make home visits if more appropriate at times to suit you.
